This artwork shows a woman holding a jug with water spilling out of it by a spring. She is unaware of her significance as an archetype of a woman who draws water as the source of all life. Just as she is the creator of new life carrying it and shielding it until the baby is ready to be born. Wherever the water is carried in the jug and spilled, it too supports life. Above the woman is a bust of an artist who is also a creator that supports life in a different way. This artwork also expresses the mystery of all life, intensified by the background of the painting with the full moon with a ring around it shining down on the sea. The color of the moon being yellow-green underlines the spiritual dimension of the artwork. There are classical historical roots for this painting, the motif also used by Picasso in Woman By The Spring. It was painted close to the time he painted the famous geometrical composition, The Three Musicians.
