In Artist And Model, the artist's studio is portrayed lit by a single light bulb. Ironically, the artist has the canvas behind him, and his brush raised as if to paint the model herself. This gesture creates tension in the artwork and a diagonal connection between the artist and the model which ties them together in an intimate relationship. She is no longer a passive participant in the artist's painting session, to the contrary, she becomes the central focus of the artwork being larger in stature than the artist and lit up by contrasting color in her face adjacent to her blue, green and aqua clothing. Her eyes are wide and full of a questioning wisdom. This lends the artwork a mysterious appearance, and calls the viewer in to look at the composition closer and embrace the dynamic of intimacy between artist and model.
